There were appeals to help catch muggers who attacked a man on the street.
East Belfast Alliance MLA Naomi Long said she was disgusted by news of incident which left the 56-year-old victim needing hospital treatment.
Three to four males attacked the man from behind in the Eastleigh Drive area in the east of the city.
The gang tried to rob their victim during the incident, which took place at around 8pm on Friday, before escaping the scene.
The man sustained injuries to his face during the attempted robbery. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
Ms Long said: "This was a terrible assault and I hope the man who was attacked makes a full and swift recovery.
"It happened in a quiet, residential area and people are deeply concerned at the brutal nature of this attack.
"Anyone who witnessed anything in relation to this attack must contact police immediately so that the perpetrators can be quickly apprehended."
